IBD is an umbrella term for two incurable chronic conditions, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Both cause the gastrointestinal tract to become inflamed and damaged.

Crohn's disease can affect any part of the digestive tract, but most commonly the end of the small intestine (ileum) and the beginning of the large intestine (colon). The inflammation in Crohn's disease is patchy with healthy areas of tissue in between affected areas.
Ulcerative colitis affects only the colon and rectum. The inflammation in ulcerative colitis is continuous and starts from the rectum, spreading up to the colon.
